Increasingly,American writers, many of them.,directly inspired by Emerson, began to free themselves for European models.Transcendentalism is a formidable term describing the movement in American culture that energized much of the literature of this period.Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau stood at the center of this movement.Transcendentalism is based on the belief that the most fundamental truths about life and death can be reached only by going beyond the world of the senses.Nature played an important role in the Transcendentalist view.Transcendentalist writing places a strong emphasis on individualism. It is high-minded with moral earnestness and the desire to reform society and education. It also asserts a philosophy of individual as superior to tradition and society.
The optimism of the Transcendentalists was not shared by all the great writers of the time. There were those who saw the universe as a more confusing and difficult place.Nature, they thought,is ambiguous, not easy to read, interpret, and harmonize.Evil and suffering had to be accounted for and were not to be brushed airily aside.Life was,as it always had been and always would be,mysterious. Then,an important development in American writing began to take shape with the writing of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville. This was the idea of the romance.Romances were not love stories, but serious novels that used special techniques to communicate complex and subtle meanings.Irving,Cooper,Bryant, and Poe certainly exemplify many of the characteristics of the large movement called Romanticism. But it is with Hawthorne that an American writer began to make a critical distinction between a novel and a romance. This important distinction is useful in helping US to define iust what it is that makes an American narrative different from a European narrative.
