前言
大学英语四级考试实行至今已有多年，其成绩已与学生的毕业成绩和学校的教学质量密切联系在一起。然而，尽管不少学校的有关部门反复强调，广大考生一再努力，每年总有将近一半的考生不能通过。这给考生的思想造成压力，影响其他学科的学习。
是什么原因造成这一局面?是考题太难?否!大学英语四级考试试题是严格按照《大学英语教学大纲》和《大学英语四级考试大纲及样题》而设计的。是考生单词记得不牢，阅读文章看得不多，还是听力练习不够?不是!那么是模拟考试不多，对考试形式不熟悉?也不是!实际上，许多考生都买过《四级考试达标词详解》，读过《重点大学模拟题集》之类的书；许多院校也
是三周一小考，五周一大考，给学生发的复习资料足有一大堆，结果学生的考试成绩并不理想。那么症结究竟何在?
原来，英汉两种语言属于不同的语系，语言习惯不同，在长期的使用过程中都积累了大量的成语、俚语、口语、谚语、习语、典故以及其他只有说本族语的人，即所谓native spealkers，才能理解的短语。试以听力考试为例：我们经常可以碰到考生把一句话的每个词都听出来了，然而却不能判断其确切意思，不敢贸然选择答案。诸如“He is a fish OUt 0f Water”，“That’s w}lere I draw the line'’或“My watc’t1 keeps gaining time'’之类的句子，稍有一点听力基础的考生都能听出它们是由哪些短语组成的，但要得出正确答案则需要对其中的惯用短语有透彻的理解。
编者曾在某校的四、六级迎考班中对学生的语法知识作过测试，发现绝大多数学生经过中学和大学阶段的英语学习，基本语法概念是相当清楚的。但他们对Vocabulary and Structure中的动词短语、名词短语、形容词短语、副词短语和介词短语的掌握，却不能令人满意。、有一次，编者特意选择了30道每题都包含这些短语的语法题，结果命中率都不太高。
至于短语对阅读理解的障碍，更是有目共睹，无需赘言。
有鉴于此，编者潜心收集全国通用的数种大学四级英语教材以及模拟和全真四级考试试卷各项中出现过的惯用短语。短语后均配有准确的中文释义和例句。短语被科学地分为动词、名词、介词、形容词、副词和连词短语等六大类型，便于学习、掌握。各节后均配有辨义、填空、选择填空和画线置换等形式多样的速记练习题及其答案，它们都是现代考试的主要形式，因而特别有助于提高应试者的实战能力。
最后提一下本书的短语分类问题：首先，我们把某个短语归为副词短语、形容词短语或连词短语，并非这个短语中有副词、形容词或连词，而是因为它们在句中起这些词的作用；其次，有些短语(如a little)既可起副词作用作状语，也可起形容词作用作定语，因而在两章中皆能找到。更有甚者，有些短语的分类可能会引起争议，但这并不妨碍同学们通过例句和练习来掌握其意思与用法。Practice makes perfect(熟能生巧)。学习外语应通过大量实践来掌握其规律，而不必过分注重术语。
另外，本书的设计目的不仅是帮助读者速记这些短语，更希望读者通过做题和熟悉词条下的卖例，接触四级考试中所有的句型，从而提高阅读和写作能力，达到一箭双雕(kiIl two birds with 0ne stone)的目的。果真如此，编者的目的也就达到了。
