本册教材是“国际合作综合英语教学实例系列教材”第一册，分上、下两册（1A、1B）分别适用于实验班一年级上、下学期。本册教材是我们根据近三年来的实验经验和一年多的编写，数易其稿而成。本教材作为“综合英语教学实验”的基础教材，秉承实验宗旨，不过于注重词汇背记，而突出把培养儿童英语语言能力放在第一位；更不强调枯燥的讲练，而注重轻松愉悦、生动活泼的语言习得过程；也不简单地追求知识的完整性，而强调贴近儿童生活和兴趣需要。本教材强调全英语教学，并根据目前儿童语言形成的需要提供相应量的内容和难度，以保证实验目标的实现，这是其他一般教材所代替不了的。根据我们的设计，儿童学完本册（含上下册）后，可以掌握词汇100个，句型100余个，听懂生活及课堂用语，并进行基本的生活对话；更重要的是，将使儿童对学习英语产生必要的认同和积极的兴趣。
本册各分册各设10个单元，分别以不同的活动性主题为教学单元加以呈现，同时配有教材录音、学生练习册和教师家长用书。“练习册”中不仅配有相关内容的练习，还提供有绘画纸张；“教师家长用书”用以沟通学校与家庭之间的联系，让家长提供相应的配合，共同提高儿童的英语水平。总之，我们尽量遵照儿童身心发展的规律、语言习得规律来编排教学内容，使整个教材呈开放性，给教学留有很大的空间，在使用教材的过程中，教师可以根据学生的实际情况进行适当地伸缩，不必拘泥于教材的某种片段。
